参拝客の数ベスト10を見ると、お寺と神社が混在している。
浅草寺も太宰府天満宮も「初詣はお寺でも神社でもどちらでも良い」という返答。
その理由は「江戸時代までは神様も仏様も一緒」「日本の神様は八百万（やおよろず）の神様なので、仏教でも神道でもいろんな神様を招き入れる」。
キリスト教やイスラム教は一神教だが、日本古来の宗教・神道の神は自然や神話から生まれた八百万の神々。御利益のある神様ならどんどん取り入れた。
その最たるものが仏教。594年、推古天皇によって仏教は正式に認められた。
日本人の大らかさが根底にある。基層文化としての神道に仏教の作法を取り入れて神仏習合へとつながっていった。神仏習合とは、神道と仏教がお互いの信仰を取り入れて調和するという考え方。
結果、神社なのに五重塔や鐘楼があったり、お寺なのに鳥居があったりという現象が。
神道と仏教を分けるようになったのは明治時代から。国家の中心として神道を利用しようと「神仏判然令」が出されたためで、最近のことなのだ。
